about

Dream Your Own History questions the mythology of American identity in a modern era engulfed by divisiveness. J Matthew Ward melds the harsh urgency of rock with the clarity of folk to craft bitter musical vistas that express a growing disappointment in what American culture has become—tribalism and traditionalism, violence and vulgarity. Hailing from Mississippi, Ward is as familiar with the dangers of these toxic ideas in the abstract as he is with the struggle of trying to extract that poison from himself. Dream Your Own History is defeatist alternative rock for the modern American age of disillusionment.
The album attacks the abuses of privilege and history in America, calling out the abandonment of lofty ideals and grand rhetoric in favor of a hollow, hyperpolitical arena of factions—a distraction from the desperate reality in which we are all living. While deeply embedded in the narrative of American history, Dream Your Own History bemoans the way America’s past has been beaten and twisted into something gaudy and hypocritical.
Dream Your Own History features live drums alongside rhythm patterns; heady electric guitar solos and simple acoustic riffs; ambient synth and bare-boned piano melody. Heavily influenced by Americana, rock, folk, and ambient music, Ward tells his own story of epiphany and shame and anger at the identity he was raised to cherish, and the consequence of the America it feeds. The album is a love song to the indie introvert, a whispered anthem to the disenchanted, somber sonnets for people steamrolled by systemic poverty, a shout in the dark to let people know they have allies in unexpected places, a lamented recognition that American exceptionalism has come at the cost of our own dignity.

I would like to say an immense thank you to Sarah Orler for her contributions and for putting up with a tortured artist such as myself. Thank you for sharing my vision of a better future. Thank you to James Wilkey for designing excellent cover art based on my incoherent verbal sketches and for enduring with such patience and kindness my continual occupation of his bedroom as studio space. Much appreciation to Alec Martin for deciphering rhythms and recording drum tracks in the chaos of my guitar songs. A very special thank you to a generous anonymous dude for opening his home and his schedule to me, a total stranger, and working at such length with me to bring this project to life, especially the wonderful piano for the title track. An immense and infinite thank you to Reid Knighten who rose to the challenging task of recording and engineering many of the tracks and who mixed and mastered the entire record. Your patience with my continual re-recording and tweaking of a hundred minute details cannot be overstated. This record would not exist without everyone who contributed musicianship, recording space, and time to it and I am forever grateful to you all.
